In prosoical situations, diffusion of responsibility occurs when an individual or group assumes others will or should intervene in a given situation. This fluidity is based on the belief that the individual or group must have the knowledge, experience or competency to intervene. The by-stander effect occurs when there is a reluctance to provide help for fear of how observers will view them.


In fluid dynamics, dispersion of waves is the effect of surface tension and gravity. Wavelengths travel at different phase speeds, much like human behavior, effected by given situations or constraints in which they reside.
